If you can score baseball, you can score softball in about two minutes of adjustment. If you have never scored either, this is the whole job from the first pitch.
Batting order down the left side, innings across the top, one box where each batter meets each inning. Softball just uses seven columns instead of nine. Positions are numbered the same too: 1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second, 5 third, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center, 9 right.
The notation carries over completely. K for a strikeout swinging, backwards K looking, BB for a walk, 6-3 for a groundout from short to first, F8 for a fly to center, HR filled diamond trot. The full scoring symbols reference applies to both sports.
Seven innings. The game is shorter, which means every half-inning matters more and the book fills faster. A 7-inning scorecard has no wasted columns.
Run rules end games early. Most leagues mercy-rule a blowout: commonly up 15 after 3, 10 after 4 or 5, 8 after 5, depending on the league. When it happens, mark the game final where it stands. The book just stops, and that is correct.
Tie-breaker innings. Many softball leagues start extra innings with a runner on second. Score the placed runner as a substitution note in the inning, then score the at-bats normally. If your game goes long, add innings one at a time.
Deep lineups. Slowpitch leagues commonly bat 10 or 11, and many rec leagues bat the whole roster. The batting order can be longer than nine, and that is normal, not a mistake in your book.
Stealing varies by league. Fastpitch allows steals once the ball leaves the pitcher's hand. Most slowpitch bans them entirely. Score a steal as SB on the runner's base path, same as baseball, and just know whether your league allows it before you mark one.
Fill in both lineups before the first pitch. Score every at-bat when it ends, not three batters later. Number the outs 1, 2, 3 in the corner of each box, and draw a line under the last out of the inning. Count filled diamonds against the scoreboard between innings, and fix disagreements while everyone still remembers the play.
Score what you are sure of and leave honest gaps for what you missed. A book with a few blanks beats a book full of invented groundouts.
